Kauai: Princeville and Lihue listed among most expensive destinations in Hawaii

A recent survey from CheapHotels.org has compared the lodging costs of the main destinations in Hawaii. With Princeville and Lihue taking the second and fourth spots, two Kauai destinations made it into the Top 4.

Specifically, the survey has established the rate for the cheapest available double room for 16 destinations in the Aloha State. The period spanning December 23 through December 28, 2015 served as the comparative timeframe.

At no other time of the year does Hawaii get more visitors than Christmas and New Year’s. Hotel rates reach record heights as a result of that influx of out-of-towners. Illustrating that point, the survey further found substantial hotel price hikes in Hawaii this holiday season in comparison to the first two weeks in December – to the tune of an average of 47% during Christmas week (December 23–27, 2015) and by as much as 84% over New Year’s Eve (December 30, 2015 to January 3, 2016).

With an average rate of $378 per night for the least expensive double room, Princeville, located on Kauai’s north shore, ranks second most expensive overall in Hawaii. On top of the rankings is Wailea. Located on the south shore of Maui, it comes in at an average of $412 nightly.

The second Kauai destination to make a showing at the top of the rankings is Lihue. This fourth most expensive holiday locale in the Aloha State is averaging $374 for an overnight stay. Two more destinations on the island of Kauai have been considered by the survey. While Poipu ranks ninth most expensive (at $320 per night), Kapaa, the largest town on the island, is significantly more affordable. Visitors can find a relative bargain there at an average of only $147 for the most affordable double room.
