World’s highest aquarium opens on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau
The world’s ‘highest’ aquarium, located at an altitude greater than 2,200 meters above sea level, opened in the town of Xining, the administrative centre of northwest China‘s Qinghai Province. It’s the first aquarium on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Covering about 28,000 square meters, the building has been split into different exhibition zones, including freshwater animals, marine life, jellyfish, science interaction and popularization, pets, dolphins and belugas.
Naked carps, which are endemic to Qinghai Lake, may also be exhibited among a lot more than 400 aquatic species and over 100 terrestrial animals in the aquarium.

The aquarium is scheduled to be officially opened, and can accommodate around 2,000 visitors.
Animal stars, including two belugas from Russia and eight bottlenose dolphins from Japan, are anticipated to stage wonderful performances for visitors.

Aquarium curator Luo Ruibin said that having traveled from low altitude areas to the plateau, the pet stars underwent examinations and were placed into quarantine. They will have adapted with their new lofty surroundings now.
“Introducing marine life to the plateau can not only educate plateau residents, but be of great significance for scientific research also,” Luo added.
