Malta leads EU Parliament discussion on Zero Carbon 2050 for Travel & Tourism

At the European Parliament in Brussels, there is a Round Table discussion among tourism and MEPs stakeholders on Climate Friendly Travel – towards Zero Carbon 2050. The function was led by Konrad Mizzi, Minister of Tourism of Malta, and chaired by Istvan Ujhelyi, Vice-Chair of the EU Transport & Tourism Committee (TRAN). Other speakers included Elena Kountoura MEP and former Tourism Minister of Greece, Malta MEP Josianne Cutajar, along with Heads of several European Tourism Organizations.

Through Malta’s Sustainable Tourism vision, and its own new global climate initiative. Minister Mizzi has brought SUNx – a climate focused legacy program for the late Maurice Strong, father of Sustainable Development – to the island, to build up a worldwide center of excellence in Climate Friendly Travel and deliver a long-term “ARRANGE FOR OUR CHILDREN.” He opened the discussion to describe why it is a major chance of Europe to create Tourism in to the global mainstream of Climate Resilience, and how MEP’s can play a pivotal role.

Minister Mizzi said: “Climate change hurtled to the most notable of the political agenda, propelled by extreme weather, climate migrants, and determined young activists. European States, EU Institutions and a cross portion of stakeholders have played a respected role in the global response in the Paris Agreement and the hardening UNFCCC 1.5o temperature increase, red line. MEP Istvan Ujhelyi, who hosted the function said that “that is an ideal time and energy to launch a bold initiative to improve the climate Resilience of the  Travel & Tourism sector, that is so crucial to the wellbeing of European citizens, also to encourage increased low carbon operations over the travel ecosystem. We in the European Parliament will work closely with the Ministry of Tourism of Malta and SUNx to help keep these issues on the political front burner.”

Professor Geoffrey Lipman, SUNx Co-founder and President of the International Coalition of Tourism Partners (ICTP), thanked Minister Mizzi for his vision to base the SUNx global center for Climate Friendly Travel in Malta saying, “we have been a legacy program for Maurice Strong – a believer in the charged power of the Travel & Tourism sector to become a catalyst for positive change, due to the widescale community and consumer impact.” He also underscored the critical role of the Parliament and Commission in encouraging the spread of increased ambition for climate Friendly solutions in the sector and thanked Istvan Ujhelyi for his foresight in identifying the significance of the issue for Europe. “We shall work closely with the Minister and the European Parliament to improve the ambition for a minimal carbon sector in the years ahead, by bringing a fresh climate focus and collaborative framework into play.”
