Enough! Exhausted Greece demands fairer sharing of migrant burden within EU
Greece on Monday called on the EU for a fairer sharing of the migrant burden amid deep concerns over a sharp upsurge in arrivals on some islands in recent weeks.
“July 7 since, day without arrivals there’s not been an individual,” Deputy Minister for Citizen Protection Giorgios Koumoutsakos told the daily Kathimerini.
On five Aegean islands near Turkey – Lesbos, Samos, Chios, Leros and kos – “the full total amount of migrants and refugees has exceeded 20,000,” in line with the minister, who’s in charge of migration policy in Greece’s new conservative government. “This constitutes a rise of 17 percent in a couple weeks.”

Greece has exhausted its capacity on the problem and is pumped up about efficient cooperation with the European Commission and the member states, the minister said.
