Strong US domestic leisure travel carries weaker business, international travel
Travel to and within the United States grew 3% year-over-year in August, in line with the U.S. Travel Association’s latest Travel Trends Index (TTI), marking the industry’month of growth s 116th straight.
The bright spot in the TTI was the effectiveness of the domestic leisure travel segment, which expanded 4% while vacation intentions reached their highest level in 2019 so far. However, forward-looking bookings and search data indicate there could be uncertainty coming for the domestic segment: the best Travel Index (LTI), the TTI’s predictive element, projects domestic travel growth will soften to at least one 1 just.8% in the coming half a year.
Domestic travel all together grew 3.4%, dragged down slightly by way of a weakening domestic business travel segment (1.2%), though business travel is likely to grab and expand 1 again.6% on the next half a year.
“As the travel engine isn’t firing on all cylinders, this season is solid the entire pace of travel through the initial eight months of,” said U.S. Travel Senior Vice President of Research David Huether.
International inbound travel—which includes experienced a roller coaster of growth contraction and spurts in 2019— in August was flat. While this can be a slight improvement from the 1.2% decline registered in July, it isn’t the hoped-for sign of international inbound travel’s revival. On the next half a year, the LTI projects the segment shall decline 0.6% since it faces continuing obstacles by means of trade tensions and the effectiveness of the dollar.

Policy changes to greatly help mitigate the consequences of the challenges are the long-term reauthorization of the Brand USA destination marketing organization, expanding the Visa Waiver Program to add more qualified countries, and improving Customs wait times.
“Brand USA has kept the U.S. competitive in the global travel market and prevented the decline inside our country’s share of global travel from being worse,” said Huether. “It is very important that Congress works fast to reauthorize Brand USA this season to guarantee the future of the United States’ travel planning and promotion.”
